Lotus & Bug: Tell us a little about yourself.
Kathryn Cid: I have been married to my high school sweet heart and wonderful husband for 50 years. I am blessed to be the mother of two beautiful adult daughters of whom I am very proud. My two grandsons are my treasures. I consider my sons-in-law my sons. Can you tell I love my family? I have an amazing circle of special friends, some of whom I have known from pre-K days, high school and college. I have been in Education for 50+ years either teaching or in some other capacity. I have written English, Business and IT curricula, worked as a proofreader for a court reporting agency, chaired a department for a private career school and currently teach online courses for a large university. I enjoy the beach, gardening, reading, the theater, visiting museums and, of course, my yoga practice. I began to practice yoga at least ten years ago. I was looking for a way to go inward and to grow spiritually. Yoga has done that for me. I have an amazing life and I am grateful!
L & B: What helps you balance your career and personal life?
KC: Working from home makes balancing work and personal life easier than working in a traditional classroom. I create my own daily schedule, which allows me time to do things I enjoy. I usually do a short yoga practice in the morning to set the tone for my day. Throughout the day, I will stop what I am doing and reset with a few different poses. I try to incorporate yoga throughout the day. Yoga brings me balance and a sense of calm that I can take with me throughout my day. The poses, some of which are still a "small" struggle, all show me an inner strength and physical strength I didn't know I had. I am happy when I am practicing yoga.
L & B: Where do you find inspiration?
KC: I find inspiration in life itself. I look at each day as a precious gift to be enjoyed – even during life's difficult times. I can always find something that makes me smile. Place me at a beach (where I gain) inner peace and inspiration that I cannot find anywhere else. Some important (life) decisions have been made while I was watching the waves ebb and flow along the shore, or by walking on the sand.
L & B: What is your first childhood memory?
KC: My first childhood memory is of being at the Jersey shore with my family. I was only two years old. I vividly remember a shiny, coral bikini my mother put on me that day. I was slathered with zinc oxide, her favorite sunscreen, which I did not like. I played along the water's edge until the sand in my bathing suit made me uncomfortable. My dad carried my back to our blanket and my mom changed me into a pink and white seersucker jumpsuit. I didn't like the legs of the pants touching the sand, so my mother cuffed them. I remember my dad calling my name. I turned and waved as he snapped a picture. This is all memory, but I do have that picture. I loved that bathing suit.
L & B: Did you have a role model growing up?
KC: I come from a large Italian family, and each of my aunts were my role models. They each gave me insights into the kind of woman I wanted to be. I was fortunate to be able to tell them the gifts (that) they gave me. No price can be placed on the positive influence they were on (the person) I am today.
L & B: What’s your favorite aspect about living in your community?
KC: I live in a small community that still maintains some sense of its past history, which I like. The town is quiet and green, almost rural. I have lived here for 37 years, and I like being able to walk into stores where people know my name.
L & B: Where is your favorite place to travel to?
KC: Wow! Anyplace I can find a beach!
L & B: What is the one thing you’ve never done that you would like to do?
KC: Study at Cambridge University.
L & B: Just for fun - would you rather fly or read minds?
KC: Read minds. I would enjoy knowing what others are thinking, even if it is about me. I could find ways of helping others if I could read their minds.
L & B: What was the last gift you received?
KC: Two beautiful bouquets of flowers from my husband and my grandsons.
L & B: What’s your favorite item in your closet?
KC: It can't be one item because my favorite items are all my shoes and sandals!
L & B: Is there anything you would like to share?
KC: Despite life's roller coaster ride, I have an amazing life! Because of yoga, meditation, prayer, my family, and special dear friends, I live every day to the fullest.
